"Recently I built a 780 HP aluminum small block Chevrolet for Robby Unser for
the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. "We put a 'Dry Sump' oil system on the engine with
the tank installed 20 inches higher than the oil pump, due to limited space. I
installed a ball valve between the oil tank and the oil pump so that the oil
wouldn't gravity feed into the oil pan between engine starts. "The night before
the Hill Climb, the engine was started with the ball valve accidentally in the
closed position. It was warmed up at between 3000 RPM and 5000 RPM for 4 to 5
minutes. I walked up to the car and saw the oil valve in the closed position and
shut the engine off. "We were terrified because we had to race the next morning
and the engine was running flawlessly. "We let the engine sit for a minute, hand
primed the oil system to get oil pressure, then restarted the engine. The engine
sounded great. The oil pressure was still 65 lbs. "Robby drove the car under
hard acceleration, brought it back to the shop, I removed the oil filter, cut it
apart, and it was clean. "Robby raced the Pikes Peak Hill Climb the following
day and won. The bearings in the engine were still good. "QMI saved us $18,000
and let Robby Unser have another Pikes Peak victory.
